Cut and paste your way to irrational desperation…

Treat Heart Pig knows how to turn any occasion into a holiday. He loves to treat others even more than he loves to treat himself. He’s a real sweetheart. He loves good friends, good food, and a good old-fashioned get-together. He has a tendency to overeat but usually takes things in moderation. He get along well with everybody else because he’s always surprising them with little gifts and treats. His symbol show his wholehearted devotion to helping others live life to the fullest.

I hate Treat Heart Pig, Treat Heart Pig is probably in my house right now wiping his ass on my clean socks, cackling about how he’s made this day a holiday. Yeah a holiday from human dignity. Treat Heart Pig is a character made up on a day when all the other good character attributes were taken. If I were on the Care Bears I would take Treat Heart Pig aside and explain how if he really cared about good friends and food food, he’d sacrifice himself for a good old- fashioned get-together, like a Luau. But would he? One Look at the smug expression on his ill-favored mug should tell you the answer to that. If you love Treat Heart Pig then the Terrorists win.

A weekend event….

leave a comment »

This weekend I read Nabokov’s Pale Fire, a novel I’ve tried reading a couple of times before, and one of the books on my “I feel really embarrassed that I still haven’t read this and I’m a self identified intellectual” list.

I’m a convert.

An interesting experience for me in reading this through was that once I was done I became convinced that the reason I’d been unable to make much headway in it before was that I hadn’t been ready. It is a shock to think that my 26, and then 34 year old self wasn’t yet seasoned enough to “get” a novel, especially since I’ve always been a precocious reader who prided himself on his taste for the difficult ( “Anatomy of Melacholy” in college, “A Thousand Plateaus”, etc.). I think that what I wasn’t ready for was not the apparatus of the novel, but for the subtle and sobering emotions that waft through that apparatus, and would have been invisible to my puffed up, prideful younger self.

This book is a piece of art for adults, for people who are adult in a way that almost all of the rest of our culture no longer encourages us to aspire to.

It’s mournful, beautiful and unflinching.

…when you wake up next to someone cute.

And when you arrive at work, a coworker hands you two cuban cigars they picked up on vacation.
